In the 17th century Salem Neck was the home of the fishing economy and the area was heavily populated. It is not clear where the house on Cat Cove that the Tytlers occupied on Dr Bentley’s advice, but it may well have been one abandoned by fishermen at a later date. The Cove is now the home of a marine research department; the line pn the map across from the Neck to Winter Island is a dam built when the ‘Smith Pond’ was created.

Apart from the dam, the view from the shore across to the island has probably not changed much;
